Readings
Lucky Eight (45-60 minutes; 30 – 300 people; ages 11 plus)
Why is the Number 8 significant in my life? You’ll have to view this power-point presentation to find out. In it, I focus on the delicate balance between fiction and reality in realistic fiction, the long-term effects of bullying, and my passion for girls’ hockey.
Post Season (45-60 minutes; 30 - 300 people, ages 15 plus)
After a quick history of the development of Power Plays, I describe a "year in the life" of a rookie author. This reading includes excerpts from Power Plays' sequel.
Writing Workshops
Key to the Character (60 minutes; 25 people max.; ages 11 - 14)
In this writing workshop, I will use samples from my plays to discuss methods of characterization available to the playwright. Participants will develop two or three characters of their own and write a short scene, using these characters. If time permits, several of the scenes can be acted out.
Gained in Translation (60 minutes; 25 people max; ages 15 and up)
Participants will learn how to translate their real-life experiences into fiction, as I did with Power Plays. Attention will first be given to creating a “real” character, and then placing this character in a “real” setting.
The Collective Creation (120 minutes; 25 people max. ages 11 -17)
This playwriting workshop is aimed at writing a series of skits, based on a theme, which could be performed by a drama or Arts Education class. Possible themes: technology, time, rumours, speed. Potential characters, settings, and situations will be brainstormed, after which participants will be divided into groups to create short skits. A “group” poem will be composed which can be used as the climax of the collection. Music can be selected for segue between skits. Emphasis will be placed on minimal props, costumes, and set. Less is always more!
Crossing Over (90 minutes; 15 people max; adults)
Yes, indeed! How does one cross over to the other side – the world of publication? Participants will learn about writing query letters, beefing up their writing resumes, and getting the most out of their local writers’ group. Critiques will be available for six writers (10 pages double spaced max.)
