(Light comes up on Felicity at R. )

Felicity: I saw Angie last week at the mall. (pause) I don’t think she saw me. I wanted to talk to her – but I couldn’t. I don’t know why. I don’t have a reason not to talk to her.  (pause) She’s dyed her hair and grown out her bangs – I guess so she can look at the world like this. (pulls her own hair in front of her face) She’s gained a lot of weight. But I could tell it was her. No matter how hard she tries -- she just can’t hide herself. (pause) Maybe you never heard about what happened to her. Or maybe you’ve just forgotten it – like one of those news items that hits the airwaves in such a big way for a few weeks – then dies as a new headline replaces it. (pause) I want to feel sad for what happened to her, but I’m kind of mad at her for copping out. For not fighting back. You see – Angie and I used to be friends. (pause) It wasn’t really our choice because after Sophie mounted up her posse, Angie and I were the only two girls left.

(Felicity walks to C.)

Felicity: Interior shot. English class. Thursday morning.

(Lights come up on box at far L with a chair behind it. Chairs are staggered in two rows across the front of the stage – four in front and three behind. Characters will eventually be seated in this formation.)

                Daneen              Angie            Chris

        Sophie            Felicity               Evan            Myron

(Myron is sitting in his chair, waiting for class to begin. Felicity walks to her chair and sits. Chris is sleeping in his chair.  Evan is sitting  and  leaning in Felicity’s direction, trying to get her attention. Sophie is sitting on the box talking to Daneen, who is standing at far L. All actors remain frozen until Felicity sits down.)

Sophie: So Daneen, are you going to the dance on Friday night?

Daneen: I don’t know. Are you going?

Sophie: I don’t know. It depends on whether or not Chris is going.

Daneen: Why don’t you ask him, Sophie?

Sophie: (looking furtively over at Chris) Looks like he’s catching up on his beauty sleep.

Daneen: (sighing) He doesn’t need much of that.

Sophie: I would ask Chris, but I’ve got this zit coming on my chin. (touches her chin tentatively) Man, you’d think that somebody would have invented something by now to get rid of zits. Daneen – can’t the guy who came up with wireless internet get on the ball and do something?

Daneen: I know. I’ve got one on my forehead. (pulls self-consciously on her bangs)

(School bell rings. No one reacts except for Chris who flinches and goes back to sleep.)

Evan: Come on, Felicity. You can lend it to me just this once.

Felicity: (not looking at him) No.

Evan: I won’t ever ask you again. I promise.

Felicity: Evan, why don’t you just do your own homework?

Evan: You know I don’t have time for that. I play hockey.

Myron: So do I – and I get my assignments done.

Evan: (turning to Myron) Myron, what you do is definitely NOT called hockey. (pause) Hey, can I borrow yours? Be a buddy, Myron.

Myron: (eagerly handing over a page) Sure, Evan.

(Evan removes a pencil from behind her ear then erases Myron’s name and writes in his own, then puts the sheet in his pocket.)

Myron: Evan!

Evan: Be cool, buddy.  You’re smart. You can make yourself another copy, right?

(Myron begins to protest.)

Evan: Ssshhh. Here comes Mrs. Greenbaum.

(Myron begins redoing his assignment.)

(Mrs. Greenbaum enters L, looking harassed. She is carrying a bookbag which is shedding papers as she hurries across the stage. Felicity picks up the papers and hands them to Mrs. Greenbaum, who stuffs them back in her bookbag.)

Mrs. Greenbaum: (sounding stressed) Sorry, I’m late! We’ve got lots to do today, so let’s get started!

(Everyone goes on speaking, ignoring Mrs. Greenbaum completely.)

Mrs. Greenbaum: Sophie, Daneen, please sit down so we can begin.

(Sophie reluctantly sits next to Felicity. Daneen sits behind Sophie.)

Mrs. Greenbaum: Is Angie absent again today?

(Everyone looks at Felicity.)

Felicity: (uncomfortably) Why are you all looking at me?

Sophie: Well, she’s YOUR little pal. Don’t you know where she is?

Felicity: No.

Evan: She’s probably playing sick again.

Sophie: (sighing loudly) Yeah, we do have a math exam next period. Speaking of which – can we have some time to study, Mrs. Greenbaum?

Evan: Or better yet -- can we do something fun today?

Daneen: Yeah, can we play a game?

Evan: Or watch a video?

Sophie: When do we get to go on a class trip?

Mrs. Greenbaum: (leaning against her desk) We don’t have time for this. Myron, will you collect everyone’s homework assignments please?

(Myron takes papers from everyone except Chris, who is still sleeping.)

Mrs. Greenbaum: (continuing while Myron is collecting the papers) We need to do a quick review of yesterday’s lesson.  As you will recall, we were discussing the relevance of classical mythology to contemporary literature – and to our lives.

(Sophie yawns and turns in her chair to face Daneen.)

Mrs. Greenbaum:  For instance, in Shakespeare, there are many allusions – note I said ALLlusions – not ILLusions -- to the Greek myths and legends.

(Myron hands Mrs. Greenbaum the papers, which she stuffs in her book bag. Myron sits down again.)

Mrs. Greenbaum: Thank you, Myron. What does everyone remember about Greek mythology?

(Angie enters R, carrying an armload of books. She has a piece of paper in her hand. She looks anxious.)

Mrs. Greenbaum: Well, here’s Angie now. Mystery solved.  Why are you late, Angie?

Angie: I was talking to the principal. (hands Mrs. Greenbaum the piece of paper)

Sophie: (turning around slowly) You were in the office – AGAIN?

Mrs. Greenbaum: (after glancing at the piece of paper) Sit down, Angie. We were just about to begin our review.

(Angie sits down between Daneen and Chris. Sophie and Daneen look at Angie and whisper. Angie looks uncomfortable.)

Mrs. Greenbaum: Now – does anyone remember anything about the Greek gods?

(Myron puts up his hand immediately and begins waving it around.)

Mrs. Greenbaum: Felicity?

Felicity: The ancient Greeks thought their gods were just like human beings – with all our emotions and flaws.

Sophie: (to Daneen) I don’t know about you – but I don’t have any flaws.

Evan: Except that big zit on your chin!

(Sophie covers her chin with her hand and looks outraged. . . .
